Chicago, IL — September 13, 2024 — On Friday, September 13th, Gro Community hosted its transformative “Breakfast for Change” at the Shinebright Discovery Center in Chicago. The event, held from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, brought together community leaders, elected officials, and mental health professionals to address critical issues affecting Black males in Chicago. This year’s theme, Collaborating for Community Safety and Mental Health, centered on fostering impactful discussions around mental health and violence prevention for Black men and boys.
A key highlight of the event was the insightful Panel Discussion, The Intersection of Mental Health and Community Safety, featuring prominent Illinois congressmen, aldermanic leaders, and members of the state senate. The panel engaged in a powerful dialogue on strategies to improve mental health outcomes and enhance community safety in Chicago’s Black neighborhoods.
As violence continues to disproportionately affect Black men and boys in the city, the breakfast explored solutions through collaboration between community stakeholders. Attendees discussed the importance of addressing systemic challenges and how mental health services can play a pivotal role in violence prevention efforts.
